Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed during the Euro 2020 Group B opener against Finland on Saturday.

UEFA said Eriksen, who was given CPR by medics on the pitch, was transferred to hospital where the 29-year-old was stabilized, with officials saying he was conscious.

A couple hours after the soccer world fell to a hush as Christian Eriksen collapsed unconscious during the Denmark-Finland Euro 2020 match on Saturday, Belgium kicked off its match against Russia with three current or former teammates of Eriksen’s in the starting lineup. One of those teammates opened the scoring, Romelu Lukaku blasting Belgium into the lead in the 10th minute.

First, the good news: Christian Eriksen is awake, stable and talking. After what happened in the first half of Denmark’s match against Finland at Euro 2020, none of that was a given. The bad news for Denmark: There was still a match to play, one that saw Finland win 1-0 in its first-ever appearance at a major international tournament.

The Denmark-Finland match screeched to a terrifying halt on Saturday as Danish star Christian Eriksen collapsed to the pitch, eyes agape just before halftime. The Inter Milan playmaker’s teammates immediately surrounded him to block views as chest compressions were performed, with players and fans alike visibly shaken.

UEFA announced the suspension of the match shortly before Eriksen was carried off the field, white sheets obscuring the view of Eriksen on a medical stretcher. The score was 0-0, but soccer was secondary.

SAO PAULO — Twelve members of the Venezuelan delegation at the Copa América have tested positive for COVID-19, health officials said on Saturday, a day before they meet hosts Brazil in the tournament opener.

"The 12 members of the delegation include players and members of the backroom staff," said a statement from the Health Secretariat in Brasilia, where Sunday's game will take place.

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) made the diagnosis on Friday night and informed local health authorities.

Italy, nominally, was the away team for its Euro 2020 opener on Friday. Though the match was played in Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Turkey was designated the home team. In reality, it was a home game for Azzurri, and one to celebrate as major international soccer returned after a year’s delay because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Assuming there are no further last-minute changes, the 2021 Copa América will kick off on Sunday, June 13, with the first two of 20 group-stage matches. Co-hosts Colombia and Argentina dropped out of hosting duties shortly before the tournament was slated to begin, so Brazil will host the month-long, 10-team tournament.
