Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will become a part owner of a third sports franchise in Kansas City.

Mahomes is joining his wife, Brittany, as part of the ownership group of the Kansas City Current, the National Women's Soccer League team announced Tuesday. Brittany Mahomes already was part of the ownership group alongside Angie and Chris Long.

Olivia Moultrie is the youngest NWSL champion in history. The 17-year-old phenom and the Portland Thorns defeated the KC Current 2-0 on Sunday to win the club’s third NWSL Championship. 

Moultrie came into the game as a substitute in the final minute to become the youngest ever player to appear in the NWSL Championship. 

The first round of the 2022 NWSL playoffs came to a close Sunday night after Kansas City Current upset Houston Dash earlier in the day before San Diego Wave held off Chicago Red Stars in the late match to advance to the semifinals.

At PNC Stadium in Houston, TX, Lo'eau LaBonta gave Kansas City the lead from the spot in the fifth-minute before another trademark Current celebration.  

Sophia Smith called out NWSL’s continuously awful officiating on Tuesday after the referees missed a clear foul on her in the Portland Thorns’ game vs. Kansas City Current game from Sunday. In the second half of Sunday’s game Smith was taken down in the box with a dangerous tackle from behind.

No foul was called, and one Twitter user posted the highlight asking how nothing was given from the referee. Smith responded, too.

As many states ban abortion across the United States, soccer fans could find more than their reproductive freedoms disappearing. They might also lose their ability to watch top-flight soccer.

NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman said this week full access to healthcare — including birth control, in-vitro fertilization and abortion — is one of the league’s values. As the NWSL seeks to increase by two teams up to 14 by 2024, states that deny women and those who may become pregnant full healthcare rights could find themselves left out of the growing women’s soccer party. 

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Friday a historic reversal to overturn Roe v Wade. After nearly 50 years of abortion being a constitutional right, states can now choose to outlaw abortion.

Two days before the 50-year anniversary of Title IX, the KC Current of the NWSL unveiled one of the most inspiring investments in professional women’s sports in America. The $18 million KC Current training facility opened on Tuesday is the first such complex built specifically for an NWSL team. It’s incredible, and the players couldn’t believe their eyes.
