The Hannah Hampton water bottle incident should be a lesson to all goalkeepers out there. If you’re keeping notes about penalty shootouts, DON’T put them on your water bottle.
Hampton was the hero of England’s 2025 Euro final penalty shootout against Spain making two saves to help the Lionesses claim back-to-back European titles. The 24-year-old revealed to TalkSport that she also did something sneaky to help her side claim the title.
Hampton threw Spanish keeper Cata Coll’s water bottle into the stands during the shootout.

Goalkeepers will keep notes of their opponent’s penalty tendencies and sometimes tape the information to a water bottle. Hampton realized this and tossed Coll’s water bottle into the stands to ensure that the shootout wouldn’t be an open notes test for the Spaniard.
Coll still managed to save two of England’s penalties, but the Lionesses still triumphed.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a goalkeeper launch a water bottle into the stands. Another infamous moment like this came in 2022 when Australia’s Andrew Redmayne helped his country qualify for the World Cup by dispatching Peru’s shootout notes.

Remember kids, keep your notes in a safe place that the other goalkeeper can’t get access to.
