Derby Day In Monterrey Is Unlike Anything You've Ever Seen

A fantastic new video from Copa90 highlights one of the most intense and competitive derbies in all of Mexican football, the Clásico Regiomontano between crosstown rivals C.F. Monterrey and Tigres UANL of Monterrey, Mexico.

Contested since 1974, the two clubs have played each other a total of 106 times. Neither team holds an all-time advantage in the series, both having won 37, drawn 32 and lost 37. Los Rayados won the most recent edition of the derby, defeating Tigres 1-0 on March 5.

The similarities between the two teams from Monterrey don’t end there. They’ve both won Liga MX four times, although Tigres have won the Copa MX on three different occasions, whereas Monterrey have only won it once.

Internationally, Tigres famously advanced to the final of the Copa Libertadores in 2015, losing to Argentinian side River Plate, while Monterrey have won the CONCACAF Champions League on three separate occasions. Monterrey also finished third at the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup.

Tigres play their home matches at the 41,650 capacity Estadio Universitario, located at the public university in Monterrey which is closely tied with the identity of the club itself.

Monterrey moved into a new stadium in 2015, the 53,500 capacity Estadio BBVA Bancomer.

Classic matches between the two sides include the final of the 2005 Interliga. Held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, this match represented the first, and only, time the clubs have met in a final, as well as the first time the clubs met on foreign soil.

Famous players who have appeared for both clubs include Francisco Javier Cruz, Luis Hernandez, Sebastian Abreu and Aldo de Nigris.
