Richarlison Gives Us One Of 2018’s Worst PK Attempts As Everton Limps Out Of League Cup

Southampton fans (finally) have something to smile about after their side’s win over Everton in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. The Saints have had a woeful start to the Premier League season, recording just one win and sitting in 16th place entering Matchday 8. The victory advances them to next round of the League Cup and gives them a boost that they will be hoping translates to EPL play. As for Everton, the loss means the Toffees are yet again dumped out of the Cup at the hands of top-flight opposition.

It was the Saints who struck first in the contest thanks to Danny Ings. The forward on loan from Liverpool neatly collected a diagonal ball in the box and slid it into the bottom far corner to give his side the lead in the 44th minute. It looked as if the visitors would scrape by with a 1-0 victory until substitute Theo Walcott bagged the equalizer in the 85th minute.

Neither team could break through in the overtime periods so with that we headed off to PKs.

It was two of Everton’s big names who failed to convert from the spot, opening the door for the Southampton win. First, Richarlison missed in particularly embarrassing fashion. The “stutter step then sky it over the goal” combo is not something you expect to see from your $50 million signing — or really even from your Sunday league teammate.

Hero-of-45-minutes-ago Walcott then had his kick saved by Saints keeper Angus Gunn.

The opportunity then fell to Southampton’s Cedric Soares to put Everton out of its misery. And that he did, cool as you like. Southampton won 4-3.

Mark Hughes’ side will now travel to Leicester City in the fourth round. Meanwhile, Richarlison will try to put that shocking miss behind him as Everton focuses its energies on Premier League play.
