7-Goal Thriller In Germany’s Second Division Is Early Candidate For Match Of The Season

Daniel Thioune's Hamburg completed a successful comeback late on to secure a 4-3 victory over Paderborn in the 2. Bundesliga on Monday.

After narrowly missing out on promotion back to the top flight last season following a late collapse, Hamburg has won its first two games of the new campaign. It had gone up 2-0 after 24 minutes thanks to goals from Manuel Wintzheimer and Simone Terrode, but Hamburg squandered the lead and found itself down 3-2 all before halftime.

Hamburg was the architect of its own undoing in the first half. Dennis Srbeny, who returned to Paderborn from Norwich last January, got his side on the board with a 34th minute penalty. Shortly thereafter, a poor pass from midfielder Klaus Gjasula allowed Paderborn in to level the score via Borussia Dortmund II loanee Chris Führich.

Führich completed his brace almost immediately, and within the space of four minutes, Paderborn had turned the game completely on its head.

Terrode scored his second of the game after 56 minutes to bring Der Dino level again. The goal moved him into first place all-time for goals scored in the 2. Bundesliga with 122.

Terrode arrived on a free transfer from Köln over the summer after scoring 43 goals in 82 appearances for Effzeh. The target man has gotten off to a strong start in Hamburg with four goals in his first two appearances.

In the game's closing stages Hamburg was awarded a penalty after a sloppy bit of defending by Sebastian Vasiliadis. Aaron Hunt stepped up to calmly dispatch the spot kick in the 82nd minute and secure all three points for Hamburg. It was a sloppy performance at times, but Thioune's side is now top of the table with two wins from two matches.
