Leicester Defeat Newcastle 3-2 After Pretty Terrific 85th Minute Own Goal

For the neutral, there’s no better scoreline in football than 3-2. Goals, end-to-end action and drama are all promised in such an outcome, and Leicester City’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle United delivered Saturday.

On the 125th anniversary of Newcastle’s founding, Joselu brought the 52,000-strong audience to its feet by opening the scoring following some great work by Dwight Gayle.

But Newcastle’s lead only lasted 16 minutes before Riyad Mahrez delivered another sensational solo effort for the Foxes.

Demarai Gray then added Leicester’s second on the hour mark with a deflected effort after Marc Albrighton’s layoff. Rafa Benitez brought on Christian Atsu and Ayoze Perez in search of an equalizer, but it was Gayle who scored his third goal in four matches to bring the Toon level.

The game turned into a rollicking end-to-end affair for the final 15 minutes. With the crowd urging them forward, this is the kind of Championship match Newcastle would’ve stormed to three points in, but the PL is proving to be a different animal for this group.

Leicester broke through Jamie Vardy, but Perez ultimately buried an unlucky effort with Shinji Okazaki in possession.

Newcastle haven’t tasted victory since their 1-0 defeat of Crystal Palace back on October 21. They host Everton on Dec. 13. Leicester travel to Southampton while now sitting a comfortable eighth in the table.
