Agustín Marchesín Saves 3 PKs, Converts Winning PK In América’s Campeón De Campeones Triumph

The new season of Liga MX kicked off yesterday with the annual curtain raiser, the Campeón de Campeones. The one-off match pits the previous season’s Apertura and Clausura winners against each other, so last night in Carson, California we had Club América taking on Tigres at Dignity Health Sports Park (home of the LA Galaxy).

The match finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and went straight to a penalty shootout. In goal for América was Agustín Marchesín, and the 31-year-old Argentine absolutely dominated proceedings.

Of the first seven shots Marchesín faced, he saved three of them. He denied Rafael Carioca, Hugo Ayala and Guido Pizarro, but his own teammates did him no favors. So things continued.

In the ninth round of the shootout, Tigres missed another — Javier Aquino could only watch in despair as his shot hit the crossbar. So who stepped up for América? Undoubtedly tired of watching everyone fuck it up for him, it was the goalkeeper Marchesín who fancied the winner.

That’s how you do it.

Here are the full highlights from the shootout if you want to see the three saves from Marchesín.

As the winners of the 2019 Campeón de Campeones, América now squares off against MLS champions Atlanta United in the 2019 Campeones Cup on August 14 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. That's a lot of campeones going down.
