Most Common Things You’ll Hear During Your Sunday League Game

The weekend is usually a time for people to relax and unwind from school or work. All the big soccer games are on the weekend, so you have all of Saturday and Sunday to get your fix in. But the thing that so many people look forward to is their Sunday league soccer match.

It gives you something to look forward to every week. Nothing beats lacing up the cleats and putting the jersey on for gameday. But with gameday comes an air of competition, and the endless desire to beat the team standing across from you on the field. Sunday league brings out the most entertaining moments in soccer, with some of the best own goals on show.

Sunday league games also bring out some of the best lines you will hear that are related to soccer. We’ve come up with a list of the most common things everyone says on gameday, and we’re sure you might be guilty of yelling one of these lines at some point.

  • “Let him know you’re there early on!” Because you always need to start the game off with a crunching tackle, right?
  • “These guys suck, why aren’t we beating them?” Most commonly said at halftime when your team is losing, because let’s face it, you guys probably suck worse.
  • (After scoring a goal, no matter how many goals you are winning by) “Still 0-0 lads!”
  • “Hey ref, I barely touched him!” Despite probably two footing the poor opponent, he apparently flopped.
  • “Ref, I got all the ball!” When in reality, you know you completely destroyed the opposition player.
  • “Ref, how long till half/full time?” We’re all out of shape, and despite being full of energy for the first five minutes, everyone slowly realizes his or her inability to keep running.
  • “Play to the whistle!” How many times have you or a teammate stopped because you thought there should have been a foul or offside? This one is for you.
  • “Don’t let the ball bounce!” When the ball cannons off the forehead of someone, or the keeper boots the ball in your direction, you better not let that damn thing bounce. Because soccer is meant to be played in the air for the entire 90 minutes.
  • “Away!” If you are near the 18-yard box and can’t accurately pass the ball, this one is for you. Just hoof the damn thing anywhere up the field.

If you play Sunday league and you have never heard any of these phrases, then you are not getting value for money. Next time you have a game, make sure you have some of these lines stored in your verbal locker, as it makes the experience that much more enjoyable.
