What's Going On With Mesut Özil? Is He Really Coming To Necaxa In Liga MX?

After a turbulent exit from Arsenal, Mesut Özil arrived at Fenerbahçe in January 2021, intending to relaunch his career. However, life hasn't been easy for the German maestro at the Turkish club.

Two months ago – after an unimpressive contribution of nine goals and five assists in 42 games — the player was dropped from the senior squad after a locker-room dispute with coach Ismail Kartal, leaving his future once again in the air.

Mesut Özil rumors: Is he going to Necaxa?

The 33-year-old still packs a set of skills that any club would die to have. And that's why the list of possible suitors flourish around his name in the rumor mill.

Hull City in the English Championship, as well as LAFC and Inter Miami (of course) in MLS, have been all linked with Özil recently. There are even some press stories connecting him with Indonesian side RANS Cilegon FC.

But they are not the only ones behind his talent. In Liga MX, Necaxa has also appeared as a potential destination for Özil. And the idea is not crazy at all because Özil belongs to an extensive list of investors owning the team, along with actress Eva Longoria and model Kate Upton.

He even sent a message of support for the team in its Clausura 2022 quarterfinal game vs. Cruz Azul a few weeks ago.

So, is he really coming to Liga MX?

Well, there is something that is going to pop that bubble not only for Necaxa but also for the rest of the clubs trying to pursue his signing.

According to his agent, Erkut Söğüt, Özil would love to keep playing for Fenerbahçe and respect his contract through in 2024. And part of that motivation is the fact that the club will have a new coach next season, with Portuguese manager Jorge Jesus being the leading candidate for the job.

"Mesut has a stake in a club in Mexico, but he has no intention of going there as a football player," said Söğüt on the radio show Spor Kazani. "Same for MLS, where his name was mentioned before. He prefers Fenerbahçe, and his opinion has not changed at the moment."
