Trinity Rodman scores in her return as USWNT defeat Brazil 2-0 in rematch of Gold Medal game

Trinity Rodman made her first appearance for the United States women’s national team since last summer’s Paris Olympics and marked her return with a goal just five minutes into the USWNT’s 2-0 victory vs. Brazil on Saturday at SoFi Stadium.

The Rodman goal vs Brazil saw the “Triple Espresso” member score with a composed finish from close range following a perfect ball from Alyssa Thompson.

Rodman has been out for the USWNT for months due to a back injury. The 22-year-old poked fun at the issue as she feigned a back injury during her celebration.

The Washington Spirit star spoke with the media a week prior to the Brazil game and conceded that the back injury is here to stay.

“I don’t think my back will ever be 100 percent. It’s kind of an issue of it’s not one specific thing, it’s just the way that my back’s structured. And it’s more so management than like a curable fix,” Rodman said.

The USWNT forward featured for 61 minutes against Brazil before head coach Emma Hayes substituted her.

Lindsey Heaps doubled the USWNT’s lead from the penalty spot in the 66th minute. Phenom midfielder Lily Yohannes was brought into the game in the 61st minute and immediately made an impact by drawing the penalty.

A captain’s finish from Heaps.

Saturday’s friendly saw plenty of fresh faces for the U.S. including two debuts. Houston Dash star Avery Patterson and 28-year-old goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce played their first senior game for the Stars and Stripes.

The goalkeeper situation for the USWNT is still very undecided following the departure of Alyssa Naeher. Tullis-Joyce had a fine performance against Brazil making several key stops.

The USWNT and Brazil will play each other again on Tuesday at PayPal Park in San Jose, California.
