Kingston gets its Messi moment as Inter Miami star scores in final seconds of the game

A late Lionel Messi goal vs Cavalier was worth the price of admission for the home crowd in Kingston, Jamaica, as Inter Miami cruised to a 2-0 victory Thursday night and 4-0 on aggregate in the Concacaf Champions Cup.

Messi began the night on the bench but entered the game with the Herons leading 1-0 and replaced Luis Suárez in the 53rd minute. The Uruguayan scored Miami’s opener from the penalty spot in the first half.

Messi then struck in the final seconds of the game to put one last nail in the Cavalier coffin.

Messi goal vs Cavalier

What a pass from 18-year-old Santiago Morales. This was just the second game with the senior team for the Miami youngster. A moment he'll never forget.

Thursday’s game was moved from Cavalier’s usual home ground to the National Stadium Independence Park which seats 35,000. The draw of Messi will do that.

There were concerns that the 37-year-old wouldn’t play as he’d missed Inter Miami’s previous three games, including the first leg against Cavalier, due to muscle discomfort. The 30,000+ fans in attendance created quite the roar when Messi removed his warm-up bib and headed to midfield.

This was the first time in Messi’s career that he’s played in Jamaica.

The result sees Messi and company advance to the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal where they will face off with LAFC.
