United States men’s national team midfielder Johnny Cardoso played a key role in Real Betis’ 2-1 upset victory against Real Madrid on Saturday. The American headed in an equalizer from close range in the first half.
With Madrid leading 1-0 early in the first half, Johnny chose perhaps the best time to score his first LaLiga goal of the season. In the 34th minute a Betis corner was swung into the box and a wide-open Johnny was there to smash in the equalizer.

This was Johnny’s first goal for Betis since a Europe Conference League game vs. Helsinki on Dec. 19.
Johnny is typically more known for his duties as a defensive midfielder where he’s attracted the interest of several clubs including Tottenham. The 23-year-old has become a staple of the Betis starting XI since joining in January 2024.
He’s started 25 games for Betis this season.
Johnny had another highlight moment when he bested Luka Modric with a cleve piece of skill.

Betis found the winner through an Isco penalty in the 54th minute.

The victory moves Betis up to sixth in LaLiga while Real Madrid lose precious points in the title race against Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
