Timothy Weah on Trump press conference: ‘It was a surprise to me… they told us we have to go’

If you didn’t have Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie awkwardly standing behind Donald Trump while he talks about bombing Iran and banning transgender people in sports on your bingo card… you’re not alone.

Italian giants Juventus were invited to the White House on Tuesday ahead of their Club World Cup opener against Al Ain in Washington D.C. that night. The reason for Juventus being present for a Trump press conference isn’t clear. All we know is that it was awkward.

United States men’s national team star Weah was asked about the moment after Tuesday’s game. The 25-year-old Juventus forward said the players weren’t aware of the plan to visit the White House and that they were told they had to attend.

Viral images and clips have come from that press conference including Trump asking the Juventus players if a woman could be allowed on their team. Reporters then began asking questions about the Israel-Iran conflict while the Juve players hung around behind the President.

USMNT midfielder McKennie was also a topic of discussion among fans as he was vocal in his disapproval of Trump during the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. McKennie said back in 2020 that Trump is racist.

The two Americans shook hands at the beginning of Juve’s 16-minute visit to the Oval Office.

Juventus defeated Al Ain 5-0 with McKennie playing the full 90 minutes and Weah being subbed on at the start of the second half.
