New year, new club... same old Ramos.
Sergio Ramos, the veteran center-back now playing for Liga MX club Monterrey, has once again found himself at the center of controversy, this time for an incident during his team’s Clausura 2025 match against Pumas UNAM on Sunday night.
Ramos was sent off with a straight red card in stoppage time for kicking Pumas striker Guillermo Martínez after the ball had gone out of play. The incident appeared to be the typical "lashing out" from the Spanish defender, a trademark of his career when frustration boils over.

However, with Monterrey comfortably leading 3-1 and only a few minutes left in the match, fans were left scratching their heads. Why would Ramos resort to such extreme measures so late in a game with little risk of losing?
This question quickly took over social media, with fans speculating whether Ramos intentionally got himself sent off to secure a few extra hours for personal reasons. Reasons only a married family man living abroad could understand.

The theories started circulating when it was revealed that Ramos' wife, Pilar Rubio's birthday was on Monday, March 17 — meaning Ramos had intentionally got himself sent off as an excuse to spend more time with his wife and family back home in Spain.
Rubio, living in Spain, had reportedly refused to move their family to Monterrey after the defender signed with the Mexican club earlier this year, with this feeding into the rumors of his 'intentional red card' online.

While such theories have generated a great deal of buzz online, it's also important to consider the timing of the FIFA international break, which will soon provide a pause in the club soccer calendar.
Given that Rayados are likely to give players a few days off, Ramos could have easily been granted permission to leave after the game on Sunday to spend time with his family on Monday.
Despite the wild speculation, one thing is clear: Ramos is still Ramos.
