Sebastián Córdova Brilliance Lands América In Liga MX Quarterfinals

Sebastián Córdova had two goals and an assist in América’s 3-1 victory over Tigres at Estadio Azteca on Sunday night. With one match remaining in the Guardianes regular season, América has secured a spot in the quarterfinals while Tigres needs to take care of business against Atlas next Saturday to have any chance of avoiding the play-in round.

It’s always big when these sides meet, and tonight was no exception with both clubs aiming for a direct path to the liguilla quarters. Despite an empty Azteca that makes you feel like your Alex in A Clockwork Orange if you stare long enough and deep enough into the multitude of fan cameras, this still felt like a massive occasion on Día de Muertos.

Córdova opened the scoring in an otherwise quiet first half after he received a pass from Santiago Cáseres and caught Nahuel Guzmán cheating at his near post three minutes from halftime.

América doubled its advantage in the 86th minute after Córdova’s set piece delivery found Emanuel Aguilera for the headed finish.

André-Pierre Gignac pulled one back for Tigres in the 89th minute after taking a touch, swiveling and firing a half-volley beyond Guillermo Ochoa. "Mr. Playoffs" is getting warmed up.

But Córdova put the match out of reach after cushioning Fernando González’s pass expertly and clipping the ball over Guzmán with his second touch.
