The United States women’s national team received a major boost as talented Ajax midfielder Lily Yohannes announced her decision to represent the U.S. instead of Netherlands on Monday. This calls for some Lily Yohannes highlights.

Yohannes, 17, was born in Virginia and moved to the Netherlands when she was 10. She’s been playing with Dutch giants Ajax for the past two years and has proven to be an exceptional creative midfielder with a pedigree of scoring screamers.
The newest USWNT player made her debut for the national team on June 4 during a friendly against South Korea. She was brought on as a sub in the 72nd minute and scored just 10 minutes later.

For Ajax she’s collected a litany of highlights. In her first professional season last year she scored five goals and recorded four assists in the Dutch women’s league. She also featured in six games of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Having a player on the national team that can score a free kick would already be a great improvement.
Yohannes’ impact for the USWNT might not be felt immediately, but she could be a key midfielder in the future.
The USWNT have seen a passing of the old guard with stars like Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Julie Ertz, Kelley O’Hara, Ali Krieger and more finishing their time with the Stars and Stripes. New talents have emerged to fill the gaps in the defense and attack like Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson, Naomi Girma and Emily Fox.
The midfield seems like the next area of change for the USWNT in the coming years as Lindsey Horan (30) and Rose Lavelle (29) are reaching the back stretch of their careers with the national team.
It’s never too early to look toward the future, and perhaps Yohannes could be the next staple of the USWNT midfield.
