Kansas City NWSL Team’s New Name And Logo Is One Of The Best In American Soccer

The return of professional women’s soccer to Kansas City was slightly anti-climactic as the city’s new NWSL team struggled to find form in its return season finishing last in the league. Saturday night’s season finale wasn’t too different as KC hosted OL Reign and was soundly defeated 3-0. Despite the loss, KC fans had plenty to cheer for.

There was a special announcement at halftime for those in attendance at Legends Field. Kansas City revealed the official name and new badge going forward. Say hello to the Kansas City Current.

The team changed jerseys at halftime and donned kits with the new badge for the second half.

Reaction To New Name And Logo

I’m a big supporter of what Kansas City has done here. I’m glad that the club is going forward with a new identity and didn’t go back to the FC Kansas City name it used from 2013-2017. I know that “KCFC” might roll off the tongue nicely, but the Kansas City Current is lightyears better.

There’s nothing worse than when American soccer clubs try to copy European names. I’m sick of the copycat nature that teams have followed lately. Slapping words like FC, City, and United onto a city name isn’t unique or interesting.

Part of what makes American soccer unique are team names. Kansas City going forward as the Current is a breath of fresh air from the sea of lackluster names.

The Current has its new name and will begin playing in a brand new home stadium in 2024.
