Gregg Berhalter is reportedly being considered as a candidate for Swansea City head coaching job

Former United States men’s national team manager Gregg Berhalter is one of the candidates for the vacant managerial role at Swansea City according to WalesOnline.

Berhalter’s contract with the USMNT expired after the 2022 World Cup but he’s still an option for the national team if they decide to bring him back. It looked like Berhalter was going to keep his job as USMNT manager after leading the team to the Round of 16 at the World Cup, however the drama saga with Gio Reyna’s family cast doubt over him returning.

An independent investigation cleared Berhalter of any wrongdoing after allegations of a domestic violence incident in 1992.

Anthony Hudson is the interim manager for the USMNT and will remain in charge until the Concacaf Gold Cup concludes this summer. A new manager will be named this year.

If Berhalter were to land the gig at Swansea, then that immediately removes him from the USMNT conversation.

Gregg Berhalter Swansea City rumors

Swansea’s manager from this season, Russell Martin, has already agreed to become the new manager of Southampton.

The Welsh club finished 10th in the EFL Championship this season and the club’s American owners could bring in Berhalter to try and turn things around for the next campaign.

The 49-year-old has only managed two club teams in his career. He had a relatively unsuccessful year and a half with Swedish second-tier club Hammarby IF from 2011-2013 before being let go.

Berhalter then went on to get the head coaching job for the Columbus Crew where he was in charge for five seasons (2014-2018). He left the Crew in December 2018 to take the USMNT head coach position.

If Berhalter does join Swansea he wouldn’t be the first former USMNT manager to do so. Bob Bradley had an infamous 85-day spell in charge of the Swans that saw him win two games, draw two games and lose seven.
