Borussia Dortmund Are Frighteningly Good, But Bayern Munich Remain Untouchable In Germany

Carlo Ancelotti has already accomplished something that Pep Guardiola was never able to do at Bayern Munich: win the German Super Cup. Guardiola was unsuccessful in three attempts, but Ancelotti has landed an early trophy in his Bayern reign by defeating their Der Klassiker rival Borussia Dortmund 2-0.

Second half goals from Arturo Vidal and Thomas Muller put an emphatic touch on a scoreline that was hardly representative of the game’s competitive nature.

Dortmund’s Signal-Iduna-Park was rocking on the night, the "Yellow Wall" hoping to put one over on Bayern while getting a glimpse of new signing Andre Schurrle and the return of the prodigal son, Mario Gotze.

Unfortunately for spectators, the curious case of what sort of welcome Gotze would receive never materialized as the World Cup-winning midfielder never left the bench.

The game was played at a ferocious pace with both goalkeepers making a number of saves throughout the first half — Manuel Neuer was in particularly outstanding form to start the season.

The deadlock was finally broken by Vidal in the 58th minute. His initial shot was saved but he was first to the rebound, making no mistake with his follow-up.

Muller, whose inability to score throughout the Euros was one of the major shocks of the tournament, took no time in opening his account with Bayern this year. His 79th minute goal was vintage Muller, Johnny-on-the-spot to poke home a Mats Hummels header in the Dortmund box.

Hummels and his new Bayern Munich teammates would see out the remaining ten minutes with relative ease, both clubs seemingly looking forward to their early German Cup matches.

Bayern Munich kickoff their Bundesliga campaign on August 26th against Werder Bremen. Borussia Dortmund open on August 27th against Mainz.
