Matchday one of the Premier League left fans with plenty of questions, however one question stood out from the rest. Why are Mexico fans supporting Sunderland?

Why are Mexico fans supporting Sunderland? Timeline

  • Aug. 16: Popular Mexico football social media account Analistas calls for Mexican fans to support a random European club this season. The chosen team is Sunderland.
  • Aug. 16: Sunderland win their EPL season opener against West Ham 3-0.
  • Aug. 16: After Sunderlands’ victory, the club’s social media accounts are flooded with comments from Mexico fans congratulating the Black Cats on their victory.
  • Aug. 17: A tweet from a Sunderland fan asking why half of Mexico is supporting the club goes viral.
  • Present: Mexico fans turn up in droves on every Sunderland social media post to cheer on the team.

What started out as a joke from the Analistas account has turned into a full blown movement. Analistas thought it would be humorous to confuse the Sunderland fanbase, but the joke has transformed into the Black Cats receiving incredible support online.

Most Sunderland posts are flooded with Mexican fans in the comments and replies.

The movement grew so large that the club put out a statement on X thanking the Mexico fans for all the love.

It’s worth noting that Analistas randomly picked Sunderland. There are no El Tri players currently on the roster. In fact, a Mexican player has NEVER played for Sunderland before.

The alliance between Sunderland and El Tri is 100% random, but you’d never know that judging from the passion Mexican supporters are showing online.
