Jamaican Women Qualify For First-Ever World Cup With Dramatic Shootout Win

Wed, 17 Oct 2018 - 18:02

It was one of those miserable Texas days when the sun never comes out and you’re not entirely sure where the sky ends and the clouds begin. It was cold and it was rainy. It was a far cry from typical weather back in Kingston — but it was the greatest day in the history of the Jamaica women's national team.

Jamaica defeated Panama 4-2 in a shootout after a 2-2 draw in the third-place match of the Concacaf Women’s Championship to clinch the region’s final automatic berth to the 2019 women’s World Cup on Wednesday at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

USWNT Secures World Cup Qualification With Surreal Five-Goal First Half

Sun, 14 Oct 2018 - 20:14

The USWNT booked passage to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup with an imperious 6-0 victory over Jamaica on Sunday night, and setup a much-anticipated CONCACAF Women’s Championship final against Canada in the process.

With automatic qualification hanging in the balance, the U.S. raced out to a 5-0 lead by the 33rd minute, and it would be ridiculous to single out an individual for praise in the face of such overall team excellence.

Panama kept Canada in check for 44 minutes Sunday, but a seven-goal, 34-minute spell ended the Central American’s hopes of an astonishing upset at the semifinal stage of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship. By advancing to the final, Canada secured automatic qualification to the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France, where it’ll look to improve on a quarterfinal showing at the 2015 finals on home soil.

FIFA To Increase Women’s World Cup Prize Money Substantially, But Not Nearly Enough

Fri, 12 Oct 2018 - 12:35

Last October, FIFA announced the 2018 men’s World Cup would dole out $400 million in prize money. This October, FIFA announced the 2019 women's World Cup prize money would also increase its prize money substantially — but not nearly enough.

From the 2014 to the 2018 World Cups, FIFA increased the men’s payouts by $42 million to a cool $400 million, with France receiving $38 million as World Cup champion.

The Stats Behind USWNT’s World Cup Qualifying Run Will Make You Feel Bad For Concacaf

Thu, 11 Oct 2018 - 11:47

On a rainy night on Thursday in Cary, North Carolina, the U.S. women’s national team blasted 59 shots toward the goal of Saundra Baron, a 24-year-old former East Carolina University goalkeeper. The Trinidad and Tobago net minder blocked a Tim Howard-esque 15 shots and was saved by the post countless other times in a heroic performance.

And the USWNT still scored seven goals and probably should have had many more.

Mexico Dumped Out Of World Cup Qualifying After Upset Loss To Panama

Thu, 11 Oct 2018 - 09:25

For Mexico, how things have played out in the past week of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship has been nothing short of a disaster.

Storms clouds seemed to loom for the team right from the start in its opening Group A match against the U.S. No one really expected the Mexicans to beat the Americans, but they were certainly supposed to give them a game. They couldn’t do that.

One Of The Best Women’s Players In The World Will Officially Not Be At The World Cup

Wed, 10 Oct 2018 - 09:29

Two more fates were sealed in the fight for the final UEFA berth in the 2019 Women’s World Cup Tuesday night. A few weeks ago, the four second-place teams with the highest point totals in their groups during Women's World Cup qualifying were drawn against each other in two-legged playoffs.

Denmark faced off against the Netherlands in a highly anticipated repeat of last year’s Euro final while Belgium looked to get through Switzerland to step one closer to its first-ever World Cup berth.

FIFA Announces New Strategy For Women’s Soccer And The Hidden Message Isn’t Surprising

Tue, 9 Oct 2018 - 16:47

FIFA launched its first-ever global strategy for women's soccer on Tuesday. It outlined three objectives for the game and five strategies to reach those goals. Hidden in each is the real reason FIFA is putting an emphasis on women's soccer.

We applaud any effort on the part of FIFA to grow the women’s game. It’s much needed from an organization that for years was run by a man whose only idea for increasing interest in women's soccer was to have the participants wear shorter, tighter pants.
