FIFA is slowly being dragged into the 21st century. On Friday, soccer’s global governing body approved increased protection for female players and coaches by establishing minimum standards for employment, including guaranteed paid maternity leave.

FIFA’s only a few decades late in catching up to the rest of the world on this matter, but at least it plans to do far more than the U.S. government.

Spain’s LaLiga has some of the biggest names in football like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Sergio Ramos. But Spain’s other league you may not be watching is certainly worth your time. 

The Primera Division is Spain’s highest level of competition for women’s football. It consists of 18 teams who all compete for the league title, as well as for two spots in the UEFA Women’s Champion League. 

Former U.S. women's national soccer team coach Jill Ellis talked informally with D.C. United last week about the club's head-coaching vacancy, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

According to the newspaper, Ellis is believed to be the first woman ever viewed as a candidate to become the head coach of a Major League Soccer team. It's an idea The18 floated last year.

In terms of all-around talent, I’m not sure there’s a better player in the world than Crystal Dunn. A world-class striker, she’s also proven to be a stellar fullback and midfielder — wherever she’s asked to play she’s one of the best at that position.

So it’s stunning to see one of the world’s best footballers traded around the NWSL for what amounts to a pittance compared to the value of this superstar.
