The United States women’s national team got their 2025 summer off to flying start on Saturday with a stellar 3-0 victory against China in a friendly.
USWNT head coach Emma Hayes will be pleased with her side as they controlled just about every aspect of the game. The big highlight was a brilliant Sam Coffey strike in the first half to double the USA’s lead.
In the 35th minute Catarina Macario received the ball in the box and laid it off to a wide open Coffey. The 26-year-old Portland Thorns midfielder made no mistake and ripped a shot into the net.

A true striker’s finish from the defensive midfielder.
This is just the second goal Coffey has scored in her USWNT career. Ironically enough her first goal also came against China during a friendly in December 2023.
Macario opened the scoring for the USWNT in the 28th minute to get the packed crowd at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on their feet.

Saturday’s friendly also saw USWNT history made. In the 70th minute Hayes brought in KC Current forward Lo’eau LaBonta who now holds the record as the oldest USWNT player to make her debut.
What a moment for the 32-year-old.

Saturday’s victory is the first of five friendlies in the coming month as the U.S. will host Jamaica on Tuesday followed by a pair of games against Ireland later in the month.
The USWNT will then take on Canada July 2.
