USWNT and Gotham FC star Midge Purce out for season with ACL injury

Gotham FC and United States women’s national team forward Midge Purce is out for the season and unavailable for this summer’s Olympics after suffering an ACL injury.

Purce was substituted in the first half of her side’s 1-0 victory against the Portland Thorns on Sunday after picking up an injury.

The 28-year-old confirmed on social media that she had sustained an ACL injury and will be out for an extended period.

Midge Purce ACL injury

The injury bug has been brutal for Gotham FC with Purce, Rose Lavelle and Lynn Williams all out with various issues. Head coach Juan Carlos Amoros has been vocal about his displeasure with the Concacaf W Gold Cup disrupting the NWSL preseason.

“We’ve seen the consequences now. We’ve got Rose, Lynn, last week it was Debinha in Kansas and now we have Midge,” Amoros said. “From my experience, the clubs are going to keep paying for that competition.

We are paying the consequences of a tournament that shouldn’t have happened.”

Purce made four appearances in the W Gold Cup for the USWNT, starting one game. She’s made 30 appearances for the national team since 2019 and was competing for a spot on the 18-player Olympics roster.

Purce was one of the go-to options off the bench for USWNT head coach Twila Kilgore during the Gold Cup.

Gotham FC lose one of their biggest stars as Purce helped lead the team to the NWSL title last season and was the MVP of the Championship game.

ACL injuries have plagued women’s soccer with a litany of USWNT players and stars across the world missing extended periods due to the injury.
