Incredible Long-Range Strike Helps LSU Win SEC Title Over Arkansas

LSU became only the second seven-seed to ever win the SEC Women's Soccer Tournament after defeating Arkansas on penalties Sunday, punching their ticket to the NCAA tournament in the process.

After defeating Missouri in double overtime in the first round, LSU shocked 12th-ranked Tennessee on penalties to advance to the semifinals, where they then upset 17th-ranked South Carolina.

A meeting with Arkansas in the final beckoned, and the Razorbacks took the lead as early as the 12th minute. The LSU equalizer didn’t come until the 72nd, but freshman defender Shannon Cooke ensured that it arrived in spectacular style.

Her swerving, dipping right-footed effort from fully 40 yards out flew into the top-right corner.

The match would eventually go to penalties, where goalkeeper Caroline Brockmeier, who was named the tournament’s MVP, helped lead the Tigers to a 4-1 victory.
