Let the ‘Chucky Mania’ commence, San Diego.

San Diego FC announce Hirving Lozano as first Designated Player in club history

Mexican National Team player Hirving “Chucky” Lozano has signed with new MLS expansion team San Diego FC for their inaugural 2025 MLS Season.

San Diego FC announced the signing of Lozano on Thursday morning, confirming the rumor linking the Mexican to the club in the past few months. Lozano will become SDFC's first-ever Designated Player with a contract until 2028 and the option to renew for two more.

“We are excited to make history as we officially welcome ‘Chucky’ Lozano to San Diego FC as the club’s first Designated Player,” said SDFC CEO Tom Penn.

Lozano, 28, will need to report with San Diego until January as they prepare the start of their debut MLS campaign in February and will play with current club PSV Eindhoven on loan in the meantime.

The move to San Diego FC comes after seven years of playing in Europe — stint where he was able to win multiple domestic titles with PSV in the Netherlands, as well as the historic Serie A title with Napoli in 2023.

“It’s an honor to join San Diego FC as the club’s first Designated Player,” said Lozano.

“It’s exciting to be part of history as we build a Club that will compete for championships in MLS. In every country I have played, I always strive to leave a mark, and making an impact in San Diego and MLS is very important to me” he added.
