Stanford Goalkeeper Star And Captain Katie Meyer Has Died At The Age Of 22

Stanford’s star goalkeeper Katie Meyer has died, the school announced on Wednesday. Stanford announced on Tuesday that an undergraduate student had been found dead in a dorm, however the cause of death wasn’t shared. Meyer was 22 years old.

“Katie was extraordinarily committed to everything and everyone in her world. Her friends describe her as a larger-than-life team player in all her pursuits, from choosing an academic discipline she said, ‘changed my perspective on the world and the very important challenges that we need to work together to overcome’ to the passion she brought to the Cardinal women’s soccer program and to women’s sports in general,” the school statement said.

Soccer fans will fondly remember Meyer’s heroics in the 2019 NCAA Championship when she made an eventual game-winning penalty save against North Carolina and gave an iconic celebration.

Off the field she was a senior with a major in international relations and a minor in history. Meyer was also a resident assistant (RA) for Crothers Hall on campus.

Stanford announced that counseling is available to those in her hall and to any athletes.
