You do not know where the Faroe Islands are. That's OK. It doesn't matter.
What matters is that the Faroe Islands, a European nation located in the middle of the ocean equidistant from Scotland, Iceland and Norway, just shocked the world and beat 2004 European champions Greece in a soccer game, 1-0.
Equally shocking, if not more so, is the fact that the Faroe Islands should have won by more. Despite possession being about even, the Faroe Islands had six shots on goal to Greece's two.
Joan Edmundsson scored for the Faroe Islands in the 61st minute with a left-footed shot from near the penalty spot. Edmunsson will probably never have to pay for a beer in his home country ever again.
Making the upset all the more remarkable is the fact that it was played in Greece, and is just the fourth away win in the Faroe Islands' history. The Faroe Islands had been winless in the team's first three EURO 2016 qualifiers, losing to Hungary, Northern Ireland and Finland.
Consider this: the Faroe Islands don't have their own military, police force, justice department, foreign affairs department or currency. All of those matters are handled for them by Denmark. So, a national soccer team is a pretty big deal to the Faroe Islands.
And now they have this. I'm happy for them.
