David De Gea Signed A Contract Extension. Here's Why He's Still Leaving Manchester United

Manchester United bungled Real Madrid’s attempt to buy David de Gea. Los Blancos tried all throughout the final day of the transfer window to close the de Gea for Keylor Navas (plus cash) swap, but Manchester United messed it all up.

No, wait. It was Manchester United who tried all day and Real Madrid who let the deal collapse.

This is confusing.

Regardless of who you believe, the deal collapsed and David de Gea signed a new four-year contract extension at Manchester United last week.

However, the deal is meaningless. David de Gea will be Real Madrid’s starting goalkeeper by the start of next season.

The draw of home is too strong for de Gea to resist much longer, especially considering de Gea and has a beautiful Spanish pop star girlfriend trying to convince him to trade the rain-soaked of Manchester for the sun-soaked streets of Madrid.

Besides benefiting de Gea’s personal life, if he moves to Real Madrid it will officially mark the shift away from the Iker Casillas era of Spanish football.

De Gea will be installed as the number one goalkeeper of the national team and the country’s most popular club team. The move makes sense for De Gea career-wise, especially in regards to his national team ambitions.

Therefore it was no surprise when it emerged that de Gea’s new contract extension has the extremely modest buyout clause of 30 million pounds. Sure, £30 million may seem like a fortune to you and I, but for two of the biggest clubs in the world that sum is mere peanuts.

So what’s the reason for such a low buyout price? It’s obvious. De Gea still has his sights set on Madrid because, as happy as De Gea might claim to be in Manchester, there is no place like home.
