Florentine Tenor Belts Out Italia ’90 Tune From Balcony While Country Remains In Lockdown

With the number of coronavirus cases in Italy fast approaching 25,000 and a death toll of nearly 2,000, its 60 million inhabitants remain on house arrest for the time being. But how to pass the time?

I thought the Spanish had settled that debate when, over in Seville, they started playing bingo…

But Florence actually has the best answer in the form of Italian tenor Maurizio Marchini. Marchini took to his balcony to serenade the city with a rendition of “Nessun Dorma” from Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot.

If the tune sounds familiar, that’s because it’s been famously performed at sporting events by legendary Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti. His final performance was “Nessun Dorma” at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, but Pavarotti most famously performed it as one of the Three Tenors during the 1990 World Cup.

The song became synonymous with Italia ’90 because look at this. Just look at it.
