Carlos Vela Tweets, Angers Real Sociedad Fans

Be careful what you tweet. Especially if you have a ton of followers and devoted fans paying attention to your words on social media.

Think twice about whether or not you want to or should tweet whatever is on your mind. Real Sociedad fans are teaching that lesson to star forward Carlos Vela.

Real Sociedad fans are furious at Vela over a tweet that Vela sent out not too long ago that centered on Athletic Bilbao’s incredible win over Barcelona.

The tweet drew controversy because Vela chose sides. Carlos Vela is either not a Barcelona fan or was incredibly impressed by Athletic Bilbao’s 4-0 win over the Catalans in the Spanish Super Cup first leg.

With that tweet, Vela has drawn criticism from Sociedad fans and some have even called for him to transfer to Athletic Bilbao if he really likes them that much.

Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad are eternal rivals in the Basque Derby. In any derby or hometown rivalry, it’s blasphemy to celebrate or cheer for the other team, especially if you play for the opposite.

There have been other moments that this has happened, for example Mario Balotelli’s infamous support of A.C. Milan while playing for Inter.

Whether or not Vela wants to head to Athletic is hard to say but we can definitely acknowledge the fact that Sociedad fans are not happy with their star forward. There were a lot of responses to his tweet and many were too offensive to share.

Vela never acknowledged that fans were upset and so never apologized for his tweet.

Let’s hope Vela wins back Real Sociedad fans with a great start to La Liga. Vela had a poor 2014-15 season, held back by persistent injuries.

He’s fit and will be coming off a Gold Cup win for Mexico. Real Sociedad’s first game of La Liga did not go as planned, tying the match 0-0 vs Deportivo la Coruna. Carlos Vela played 88 minutes of the match.

Catch Real Sociedad’s next La Liga game on August 29 at home against Sporting Gijon.
