The W-League Semifinals Are Set In Australia

The ninth regular season of the W-League is coming to a close as the top teams will play in the W-League semifinals this weekend.

The 2016/17 playoffs will feature three former champions: Sydney FC, Canberra United and Melbourne City, as well as Perth Glory. The nine team league had a clinch breakaway top four as the season began to wind down, which ended with a five-point gap between fourth and fifth. At one point during the season all four of the top clubs held the first position in the table.

The remaining three clubs at the top all faced teams already eliminated from the playoffs last weekend. The final standings have Canberra United in first with 23 points (+12 goal differential), Perth Glory in second with 23 points (+4 goal differential), Sydney FC in third with 22 points and Melbourne City in fourth with 20 points.

As such, Canberra United will play Melbourne City on Saturday, February 4 at 12:30 a.m. MT and Perth Glory will play Sydney FC on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. MT.

For fans of the NWSL, several of this year’s top scorers will be familiar. A high numbers of NWSL players spend the off-season in the W-League. Jess Fishlock (Seattle Reign/Melbourne City FC), Samantha Kerr (Sky Blue FC/Perth Glory) and Natasha Dowie (Boston Breakers/Melbourne Victory), all rank among the W-League's star players.

The Grand Final, as it is called, will be played on February 12.
