Watch: Paul Arriola hits Zorhan Bassong with throw-in; gets Kansas City defender sent off

While the world and the United States continue to be mesmerized by the Euros and Copa América this summer, MLS still finds ways to stay relevant. Not exactly your goal of the week or silky move highlight, though.

Zorhan Bassong red card vs. FC Dallas

During Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas’ MLS Matchday 22 match on Sunday, defender Zorhan Bassong was sent off following a messy altercation with Dallas’ Paul Arriola in the closing minutes of the game.

With Dallas looking to put the score level in added time, an attempt to take a quick throw-in, stalled and blocked by Bassong, lead into former USMNT player Arriola throwing the ball into the defender’s forehead.

This, of course, was not well received by the Canadian who took the heavy hit, ‘returning the favor’ to Arriola with a violent push. The fan’s hilarious reactions from the stands sum up the whole sequence.

Both players were eventually given a booking, with Sporting KC’s Bassong being sent off after having been given a yellow card earlier in the match.

The altercation essentially left Dallas without the chance to equalize the scoreboard, with Kansas City keeping the three points after a 3-2 win.

Just another day in MLS, ladies and gentleman.

Interestingly enough, the teams will have a ‘rematch’ just three days later as they will face off in the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals on Wednesday, with Bassong expected to start following his ineligibility for their next MLS match.

Let the Open Cup madness continue.
