USMNT Defender DeAndre Yedlin Looks Set For MLS Return After 5 Years In England

DeAndre Yedlin’s future is in a state of uncertainty with the sun setting on his time with Newcastle in the Premier League. Talks of Yedlin leaving Newcastle this transfer window were floated around earlier in the summer but now a destination seems clear. A report from CBS’ Roger Gonzalez claims the return of Yedlin to MLS looks likely.

Yedlin started his professional career with the Seattle Sounders in 2013. He played for the Sounders in the 2014 season before he made the move across the pond to join Tottenham. He didn't see any real time with the Spurs and was loaned to Sunderland for the 2015-16 season. After the loan spell he made his move to Newcastle.

Yedlin experienced decent success under Rafael Benítez for three seasons but fell out favor of new manager Steve Bruce. Various injuries also hindered the 27-year-old last season as he missed over 10 games.

The American right back made his first appearance for Newcastle in the 2020-21 season on Tuesday against Blackburn Rovers in the EFL Cup. Despite Yedlin playing a full 90 minutes, his performance didn’t impress the Newcastle-faithful.

Newcastle fans were unimpressed with Yedlin's first game of the 2020/21 season.

Gonzalez reported that all hope of remaining in Europe isn’t lost just yet for Yedlin.

MLS is a growing league with work to done, but for Yedlin’s sake extending his time in Europe looks to be the best option. At 27 years old there is still life in Yedlin’s legs and a move from the Premier League to MLS could jeopardize his future role with the USMNT. Reggie Cannon looks poised to take over the right back position for the national team and recently left MLS for Europe. That being said, if the only offers Yedlin receives are from MLS, you can’t blame the guy for wanting to play instead of riding Newcastle’s bench.

Yedlin’s contract with Newcastle extends until 2021, but with little use for the American a loan or transfer is likely. The Premier League transfer window closes Oct. 5, so there is still time for a decision to be made.
