Wayne Rooney Set The Premier League Record for Goals for One Team

Sunday January 17 Wayne Rooney scored a goal in the 78th minute vs. rival Liverpool, helping propel Manchester United to a 1-0 victory. This goal was important for two reasons: it gave Man U a needed win, and three points in the standings of the EPL, where they currently sit fifth overall, and this goal put Rooney atop the record books as the player to score the most goals for one team in Premier League history.

With 176 goals for United, Rooney passed Thierry Henry's Arsenal record.

It really is a testament to the career of Rooney that he is able to stand alone on the leaderboard, and goes to show the amazing career he has had for Manchester United.

The only player to appear on this list twice is Alan Shearer, who was able to record enough goals in his time spent at both Newcastle and Blackburn Rovers.

Because Shearer was such a prolific goal scorer, he is the only man ahead of Rooney on the all-time EPL scoring leaders with an edge of 69 goals.

So where does this leave Rooney in his chase to become the all-time leading goal scorer in league history?

He is 30 years old, and will be 31 in October of this year. He is scoring at a pace of .44 goals per game ,so if he continues at that rate he would need to compete in roughly 157 more games in order to tie Alan Shearer.

The EPL season is 38 games, so if he were to play in every game for his team in a season he would need to continue that same level of scoring for more than four more complete seasons, which puts him at the age of 34 closing in on 35.

Just food for thought: Alan Shearer played his final season in the Premier League at the age of 35, so there still is a chance to catch him if Rooney can play long enough at a reasonably high level.  Records were made to be broken.
