Venezuela Keeper Saves Penalties From Carlos Bacca And James Rodriguez In The Same Game

Venezuelan goalkeeper Dani Hernandez stopped two penalties against Colombian stars Carlos Bacca and James Rodriguez in less than 15 minutes in a World Cup qualifier Thursday. Colombia beat Venezuela 2-0 in Barranquilla.

Hernandez, who plays for Tenerife in the Spanish second division, is the first goalkeeper to stop two penalties in a World Cup qualifier in CONMEBOL history, according to @OptaJavier.

Hernandez returned to the Venezuelan National Team in 2016 after Rafael Dudamel was named manager. In 2015 when Noel San Vicente was Venezuela’s manager Alain Baroja was the goalkeeper.

Stopping two penalties in regulation is something that often happens in professional football. For example, Guillermo Sara, then Atletico Rafaela goalkeeper, became famous some years ago because he is the latest goalkeeper in Argentine football who has stopped two penalties in one game. His victim was Racing's José Sand.

In Scotland Ben Williams, an English goalkeeper, stopped a pair against Dundee when he played for Hibernian. Dundee won the game 3-1.

In the Bundesliga, Bernhard Wessel, Borussia Dortmund’s goalkeeper, stopped two penalties against Hamburg.

However, the record belongs to Jean-Francois Gillet, who stopped three penalties in a match in the Belgian first division.

Gillet is Mechelen’s goalkeeper. Last October Anderlecht played at home against Mechelen.
