USWNT draw Germany and Australia for Olympic group — here’s what it means and our prediction

The United States women’s national team’s 2024 revenge tour will begin in Nice and Marseille for this summer’s 2024 Olympics. The USWNT Olympic group will feature the winner of Morocco/Zambia along with powerhouses Germany and Australia.

After claiming bronze in 2020 and not making the podium in 2016, the USWNT will be seeking their first gold medal in 12 years.

USWNT Olympic group 2024

USWNT Olympic group schedule

July 25: USWNT vs. Morocco/Zambia | 3 p.m. ET | Nice, France

July 28: USWNT vs. Germany | 3 p.m. ET | Marseille, France

July 31: USWNT vs. Australia | 1 p.m. ET | Marseille, France

Is this a good group for the USWNT?

Yes.

With only 12 teams qualifying for the Olympics there aren’t any easy groups. Hosts France got the kindest group of the three, but the USWNT will be thankful to avoid Group C which has Spain, Japan AND Brazil.

USWNT interim head coach Twila Kilgore, who will be an assistant to Emma Hayes during the Olympics, said the opponents will be a challenge.

"It's going to be a very tough Olympics," Kilgore said after the draw. "When you think that some of the top ranked teams in the world not even getting to participate in the Olympics, I think that says volumes.

"All the groups are hard, and it would be wrong to underestimate anybody."

The USWNT have the benefit of playing the winner of Morocco/Zambia first. The first game will be the least challenging of the three but not a guaranteed victory. Morocco stunned everyone in the 2023 Women’s World Cup and advanced out of their group over Germany.

A strong start will get the USWNT on track for their next game vs. Germany and the group stage finale vs. Australia. The Matildas will be without superstar Sam Kerr who is recovering from an ACL injury.

How likely are the USWNT to advance from the group?

Highly likely.

The top two teams of the group AND the two best third-place teams will advance to the quarterfinals. The USWNT would need to have a cataclysmic group stage to not advance.

We predict the USWNT to finish with seven points with two wins and one draw against Germany.

Who could the USWNT face in the knockout stage?

While we don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared. Here are the scenarios of opponents after the group stage.

  • USWNT finish top of Group B: Runner-up of Group C (likely Spain, Japan or Brazil)
  • USWNT finish second in Group B: Runner-up of Group A (likely Colombia or Canada)
  • USWNT finish third in Group B*: Either winner of Group A or C (likely Spain or France)
