Marcos Alonso’s Spectacular Brace Spoils Tottenham’s Wembley Opener

Chelsea got their title defense back on track with a massive 2-1 victory over Tottenham in their temporary Wembley home on Sunday. Wing-back Marcos Alonso scored the first ever Premier League goal at Wembley with a sweetly struck free kick, and with a 1-1 draw looking likely, he swept forward to score the winner in the 88th.

Alonso’s piece of brilliance in the 24th minute was the highlight of an enthralling opening 45 minutes between two of England’s best sides.

Tottenham took control of the match after the opener, and their continued dominance was rewarded with an equalizer in the 82nd minute. A dangerous delivery from Christian Eriksen was met by Michy Batshuayi, who’d just come on as a substitute. The forward sent his header beyond Thibaut Courtois for an unfortunate own goal.

With Spurs looking dominate and substitutes Son Heung-Min, Moussa Sissoko and Vincent Janssen all on the pitch, a Tottenham winner seemed probable. But Spurs cheaply lost possession in their own half, Pedro played in Alonso and the Spaniard somehow managed to slip his shot beneath Hugo Lloris. Antonio Conte approved.

After Sunday, the top four in England reads Manchester United, Huddersfield Town, West Brom, Watford.
