Rumors of Folarin Balogun joining the USMNT are at an all-time high — here’s why

Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun is having a remarkable season in Ligue 1 with Reims. He’s scored 17 goals in 27 games (only two behind league leaders Jonathan David and Kylian Mbappé) and is firing on all cylinders.

The 21-year-old talent has a big decision to make in his career and that is who he will represent on the international stage. Balogun was born in New York City to Nigerian parents and raised in England. He’s eligible to represent the USMNT, England and Nigeria.

So why all the fuss and Balogun USMNT rumors as of late? Let’s provide some context and recap the events that have taken place in the last week.

Balogun has played for both England and the United States’ youth national teams. He last played for the U.S. U-18 team in August 2018 while he’s appeared for England’s U-17, U-18, U-20 and U-21 in recent years.

He’s made 13 appearances for England’s U-21 team and looked set to make the jump to the senior team. At least that’s what people thought until a string of events took place in March that has excited USMNT fans.
