Athletic apparel company Title Nine gifted the USWNTPA $1 million on Wednesday — the largest sum the players association has ever received — saying it’s to help solve the pay gap between the men’s and women’s national soccer teams. It’s an awesome gesture similar to when LUNA Bar made a large donation in 2019. What does it really mean for how much the USWNT is paid for the Olympics? Let’s dig in.

Defending champions Brazil advanced to the quarter-finals of the men's Olympic soccer tournament after a 3-1 victory over Saudi Arabia on Wednesday helped them top Group D while Ivory Coast booked their berth by sending Germany home.

Japan advanced after delivering the knockout blow to 10-man France with a 4-0 win to stay perfect in Group A. Takefusa Kubo, Hiroki Sakai, Koji Miyoshi and Daizen Maeda all scored for the rampant hosts while Randal Kolo Muani was sent off for France.

Se acabó la fase de grupos del fútbol femenil en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio y entre las conclusiones no hay dudas de que Estados Unidos fue una verdadera y sonora decepción. Las actuales campeonas del mundo avanzaron a los cuartos de final, pero detrás dejaron una imagen bastante vulnerable: derrota ante Suecia (0-3), triunfo ante Nueva Zelandia (6-1) y un extremadamente aburrido 0-0 ante Australia.

Sin puntos y con una sensación amarga contra el arbitraje. Así dejó Chile la primera participación de su historia en el fútbol femenil de los Juegos Olímpicos.

La Roja había perdido, como era de esperarse, sus dos primeros partidos -Gran Bretaña (0-2) y Canadá (1-2)-, pero aún tenía esperanzas de clasificar a cuartos de final como mejor tercera, en caso de vencer a Japón en el último duelo del grupo.

Por supuesto, la tarea no iba a ser fácil. Japón posee un ecosistema en el fútbol femenil mucho más desarrollado que el chileno y además son las anfitrionas del torneo.

After a 0-0 draw with Australia confirmed the USWNT’s runner-up finish in Group G of the Summer Olympics, our collective focus shifted to Group F with the U.S. scheduled to play the winner on Friday in Yokohama. 

For all the talk about building momentum and playing their best stuff come the knockout rounds, the USWNT has very little momentum and could put you into a soccer-induced coma heading into a quarterfinal against either the Netherlands or Brazil after drawing Australia 0-0 on Tuesday morning.

The optimist might say “job done.” The USWNT had nothing to gain here with Sweden locking up the top spot in the group, but the team could’ve still dropped to third with a defeat. The realist will say “yeah but that was terrible.”  

A beautifully chaotic Gold Cup quarterfinal between the USMNT and Jamaica produced a dramatic winner on Sunday night in Arlington after 20-year-old forward Matthew Hoppe earned the Americans’ passage to the semis with a header in the 83rd minute.   

With an average age of 23 and average cap collection of just 12, there was a question of nerves — especially after a large crowd at AT&T Stadium had belted out "The Star-Spangled Banner" to animate the enormity of the occasion.
