Liverpool star Diogo Jota and brother killed in car accident

MADRID — Liverpool's Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his brother died in a car crash in northwestern Spain early on Thursday, when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames.

Evidence at the crash site suggested Jota's car suffered a burst tire while overtaking, police said. The vehicle then flipped over and ended up in the central reservation. The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the province of Zamora.

Rising United States women’s national team star Lily Yohannes is on the brink of making a big career move as she’s set to leave Ajax and join Lyon, per ESPN’s Jeff Kassouf.

Yohannes has been electric in her two seasons with Ajax’s senior team as the young midfielder impressed in the Eredivisie and earned call ups to the USWNT. Yohannes was eligible to represent the U.S. and Netherlands, but ultimately decided the Stars and Stripes looked best on her.

Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has criticized the introduction of the expanded Club World Cup format, calling it the worst idea ever implemented in football.

In an interview with German newspaper Die Welt published late on Friday Klopp said the tournament would put more strain on an already packed calendar for the players.

Olivier Giroud TERMINATES contract with LAFC, set to return to Ligue 1

Los Angeles FC striker Olivier Giroud agreed to terminate his MLS contract and will return home to France to join Lille this summer, ESPN reported Friday.

The 38-year-old former FIFA World Cup champion with France in 2018 is in his second season with LAFC and has six months remaining on his contract.

French giants Lyon RELEGATED from Ligue 1 due to financial trouble

Olympique Lyonnais have been relegated to Ligue 2, French football's financial watchdog (DNCG) said on Tuesday following an audit of the club.

Lyon were provisionally demoted by the DNCG in November for financial mismanagement and the decision was confirmed on Tuesday.

Seattle Sounders players call for 'fair share' of Club World Cup prize money with 'Cash Grab' pre-match shirts

June 2 (Reuters) - Seattle Sounders players called for a bigger slice of the prize money for competing at the Club World Cup this month by wearing T-shirts emblazoned with "Cash Grab" and "Fair Share Now" ahead of a Major League Soccer match on Sunday.

Seattle are set to earn at least $9.55 million for competing at the June 14 to July 13 tournament in the U.S., where the total prize money runs to $1 billion, but under the MLS collective bargaining agreement (CBA) the players' share is capped at $1 million per club.
