The 2015 Clausura final pits eight-seed Santos Laguna against six seed Queretaro. There was a time, a few months ago, when both of these teams were sitting near the bottom of the table, sliding into hopelessness. Then they both caught fire and now one of them is going to win it all.
Both teams favor a fast-paced, counterattacking style, which means we’re in for one hell of a ride. There won’t be very much midfield possession or randomly knocking the ball around in this game, methinks.
Cuauhtemoc Blanco is running for mayor in the Mexican city of Cuernavaca. This is fantastic in and of itself, but what's even more fantastic is it looks like he might actually win. Blanco tweeted a picture of a poll that shows him with a slight lead over his competitors, a massive improvement from his standing when he first announced his candidacy.
As many of you know, Marco Fabian scored an especially brilliant hat trick last weekend for Chivas, helping to pave the Guadalajara club's way into the Liga MX Clausura semifinals. You might not be aware, though, that the whole thing was just a big piece of performance art. It turns out Fabian was just doing impressions of his favorite players scoring goals. Look, here's Fabian's impression of Steven Gerrard's goal against Olimpiakos in the 2004-2005 Champions League group stage:
After years of speculation, the time appears to finally be near – Ronaldinho is likely heading to the U.S. to play in the MLS this summer. As the greatest player of the 2000s decade and one of the most widely loved players of all time, Ronaldinho’s impending MLS arrival should create an excitement for the league that meets or exceeds the hysteria created by Ricardo Kaka, Thierry Henry and David Beckham bringing their talents stateside.
Brazilian born legend Ronaldinho Gaucho is at it again. Currently playing in Liga MX for Queretaro FC, he shows off his impressive skills with ease as if he was playing for Barca again. There is simply no stopping him, even at the age of 35.
Club America and Liga MX are officially the kings of CONCACAF after they thoroughly beat the MLS’ Montreal Impact 4-2 in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Final. The game was not as close as the score line would indicate. After Montreal’s Andres Romero opened the scoring with a great goal produced from a charmed run through America’s box, Club America’s Dario Benedetto announced his presence with a glorious scissor kick to equalize the score.
Chivas de Guadalajara faced off against Club America in Mexico’s biggest rivalry on Sunday. And while few will remember this Super Clasico for its 1-1 score line, many will never forget the goal that America’s Paul Aguilar scored, and almost everyone will remember how he celebrated.
At first, we lost a little faith in Aguilar after his first touch took the ball about 10 yards away from him, but little did we know that he had simply given himself a perfect runway to charge up for an absolute thunderbastard of a shot.
Cuauhtemoc Blanco’s first name roughly translates to “one that has descended like an eagle.” It is a fitting translation for the man that took Mexican soccer by storm over twenty years ago. He is known now as a legend, the face of Club America during the 1990s. His unique, unorthodox, and undeniable skill was and is the perfect representation of Mexican flair, the kind that deserves to represent the more cosmopolitan of the twin giants of Mexican soccer: America and Chivas de Guadalajara.
The Mexican national team takes on the United States national team next week in what will be anything but a friendly match. The two teams are bitter rivals who constantly battle for regional dominance, with Mexico usually at the winning end between the two. The two sides will meet in San Antonio in preparation for this summer’s busy international schedule. Mexico will be looking to continue their 2015 undefeated streak, having won against Ecuador and Paraguay in the most recent international break.
