Real Madrid Crashes Out Of Copa Del Rey Again After Shocking Upset At Home

Real Madrid and the Copa Del Rey simply don’t mesh well. On Thursday, the Spanish giants were knocked out of the tournament in the quarterfinals at the hands of Real Sociedad. The loss also ended a 21-game unbeaten streak for Los Blancos.

In the most ironic fashion, Real Madrid loanee Martin Odegaard opened up the scoring for Sociedad midway through the first half. Alexander Isak thought he doubled the lead in the 49th minute but his goal was disallowed. No worries though as Isak would get his goal just five minutes later, and it was a fabulous volley at that.

Isak would later secure a brace courtesy of the Real Madrid defense losing track of the big Swede.

Marcelo sounded the comeback alarm after sneaking a shot in at the near post in the 59th minute, but Real Sociedad said "not so fast, buckaroo” and found the net for a fourth time through Mikel Merino in the 69th minute. This marked the first time ever that Real Madrid had conceded four goals under manager Zinedine Zidane.

Two late Los Blancos goals wouldn’t be enough, and for the sixth year in a row, the club has failed to reach the Copa Del Rey final.

Real Madrid Vs. Real Sociedad Copa Del Rey Quarterfinal Highlights 2019-20

A look back down memory lane shows a trend of failure in the competition for Real Madrid. Since the turn of the millennium, Real Madrid has only won the Copa Del Rey twice. Over the last six years, the club has reached the semifinals only once.

2018-19: 4-1 semifinal defeat to Barcelona.

2017-18: 2-2 aggregate quarterfinal defeat to Leganes.

2016-17: 4-3 quarterfinal defeat to Celta Vigo.

2015-16: The infamous forfeit to Cadiz in the Round of 32.

2014-15: 4-2 Round of 16 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Maybe next year Los Blancos, maybe next year.
