Bomb Threat At FIFA Headquarters In Zurich

As if things couldn’t get any more convoluted and conspiratory at the world headquarters of FIFA in Zurich, Switzerland, a bomb threat has apparently targeted the 65th congressional gathering taking place today.

With the vote to elect the next President of FIFA set to take place, the bomb threat is an unwelcome occurrence in what was going to be a noteworthy day regardless of whether or not the threat had been leveled.

In the wake of the arrests made in Zurich on Wednesday — high profile results of Swiss and American investigations into corruption in FIFA — incumbent president Sepp Blatter’s previously untouchable seat as the most powerful man in soccer has ostensibly become far from secure. Many nations from UEFA, CONMEBOL, and some from CONCACAF have publicly declared that they will vote against Blatter in light of the events of mid-week, and others, such as England, have said that a Blatter victory could lead to rebelliousness.

Proceedings leading up to the vote were brought to a halt when, according to a tweet from German journalist Jens Weinreich, the hall housing the congressional gathering had to be cleared because it needed “cleaning.”

A bomb threat was reported an hour later.

FIFA admitted to being “caught flat-footed” by the threat after they initially refused to take it seriously. Police and Fire fighters were brought in to deal with the situation, which has since been resolved.
