Mexican legend Rafael Márquez is set to become El Tri’s newest assistant coach. All with the plan to lead Mexico as head coach in a FIFA World Cup.

According to reports coming out of Mexico, FC Barcelona Atlètic head coach Rafa Márquez is just details away from accepting the proposal of become the Mexican national team’s assistant manager.

Marquez, who has been coaching FC Barcelona's reserve team in the Spanish third division for the past two seasons, will become part of El Tri’s coaching staff ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
This comes after Mexico sacked former manager Jaime Lozano following their group stage exit at the 2024 Copa América, with the Mexican federation approaching the announcement of Mexican and former national team coach Javier Aguirre as their new manager.
The legendary defender, who was rumored to be in the mix of options for the managerial position at Barcelona prior to the arrival of Hansi Flick, would have accepted the assistant manager role after being offered to guide the team into the 2030 World Cup, with Aguirre reportedly stepping down after the 2026 World Cup.
Márquez began his managerial career in 2020 as a youth coach with Álcala, landing a job in the youth ranks with former club Barcelona in 2022.
Márquez, winner of two UEFA Champions Leagues, is the only player to ever captain their nation in five separate World Cups.
