Neymar And Brazil Jeered Off The Pitch Following 0-0 Draw With South Africa

With a squad containing the likes of Neymar, Renato Augusto, Gabriel Jesus and Rafinha, it was understandable that a huge home crowd booed their own team off the pitch following a scoreless opening Olympic match against South Africa.

Brazil played the majority of the second half with a man advantage following Mothobi Mvala’s dismissal, but they could not find a way past South Africa despite registering 20 shots with seven of those on target.

South African keeper Itumeleng Khune was in inspired form while new Manchester City signing Gabriel Jesus could only strike the post with the goal at his mercy.

For Brazil, it’s certainly Olympic gold or bust following the inclusion of Barcelona star Neymar as one of their overage players. However, the same internal pressure that ultimately doomed their 2014 World Cup campaign reared its ugly head again on Thursday.

South Africa should be given credit for their resolute display, but Brazil were hardly inspiring against their African opposition.

Of particular concern for Brazil will be the play of 28-year-old Renato Augusto and the lack of a clear game plan. While Brazil boast a huge variety of attacking talent, they were clearly lacking the cohesion necessary to punish South Africa.

While Brazil can certainly grow following this game, the pressure is only going to increase on a side that is heavily favorited to win the tournament.

Brazil’s next match is on August 7th against Iraq. Iraq drew their opening match against Denmark, 0-0.
