Jackson Martinez Cost Almost $5 Million Per Appearance In China

Colombian forward Jackson Martinez was one of the first Europe-based players to make a lucrative move to China. The former Porto and Atletico Madrid player was snapped up by Guanzhou Evergrande for an amount of money that seemed like far too much at the time.

Well guess what: it turns out Guangzhou Evergrande paid far too much money for Jackson Martinez. The Chinese club released Martinez Friday after two years in which he made just 16 appearances and scored just four goals. Martinez's lack of playing time was mostly due to injuries, so we can expect them to sign, like, Daniel Sturridge as his replacement.

In American dollars, that adds up to $4,579,070 per appearance and $18,316,279 per goal. Martinez is now a free agent, and could be a good signing for a team looking to add attacking firepower down the stretch of the European season.
