World Cup Hero Mario Gotze Sidelined Indefinitely With Metabolism Problem

Mario Gotze, the 24-year-old Borussia Dortmund attacker who is best known for scoring the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, has been sidelined “for the time being” with “metabolic disturbances” according to a statement from his club.

Gotze has only appeared in 11 of Dortmund’s 22 Bundesliga matches following his return to the club after three seasons with Bayern Munich. A series of muscular injuries resulted in the club looking further into the issue, revealing the metabolism issue that will sideline him for an indefinite amount of time.

“He has continually suffered with muscular problems in the past few months, prompting a comprehensive internal investigation into the possible causes,” said the club. “Those investigations revealed the player has metabolic disturbances, rendering it absolutely necessary to withdraw him from team training for the time being.”

This is another unfortunate turn in the career of a man that’s not had the best time following his World Cup triumph. Gotze fell out of favor with Pep Guardiola at Bayern following the World Cup, and his performances were criticized by club legend Franz Beckenbauer.

Gotze had this to say on the setback: “I’m currently undergoing treatment and will do everything in my power to be back in training and helping my team to achieve our common goals as soon as possible.”

While they’ve almost certainly been eliminated from Bundesliga title contention, Dortmund are in the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal and play Benfica in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie on March 8.
