Gio Reyna’s transfer drama is over — he’s going to Nottingham Forest on loan

United States men’s national team talent Gio Reyna has been linked to several clubs across Europe as he seeks playing time away from Borussia Dortmund. There were many reports on where he could go but, in the end, a Gio Reyna Nottingham Forest loan is the outcome.

Reyna will be loaned to Forest until the end of the 2023-24 season, however the Premier League club won’t be given the option to permanently buy. Instead, the 21-year-old has signed a new contract with Dortmund that runs through 2026.

Gio Reyna Nottingham Forest loan

Is this a good move for Gio?

We at The18 have discussed this move and said that if we were to give this loan a grade, we’d give it a C.

The physicality of the Premier League, Forest’s battle against relegation and potential for a point deduction are all concerns. The good news is that the move is only a loan so no matter what happens to Forest this season Gio won’t have to go down with the ship.

Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo does use a formation with Reyna’s preferred No. 10 role, however Morgan Gibbs-White has that position locked down.

Gibbs-White has started in 19 of Forest’s 21 league games and typically goes the full 90 minutes. How Reyna fits into Forest’s squad will be interesting to see.

The style of play will also be a complete 180 for Reyna. With Dortmund the German giants tend to dominate possession usually having more than 50, sometimes 60 percent. Compare that to Forest’s latest game against Arsenal where Nottingham had just 26 percent possession.

Gio will get to do a lot more defending with Forest.

Regardless of how the season ends, Reyna will go back to Dortmund in the summer. In a perfect world Reyna will have some impressive performances for Forest and at Copa América that will interest another club in Europe to buy the American on a permanent transfer in the summer window.
